Summary on Grant Application Form |
Concerned with the construction a concept demonstrator for the quantitative modelling of the dyanmic behavior of the human knee joint, the aim of the work is to increase the competency and productivity of surgeons. Current medical visualisation systems allow manipulation of computer representation of anatomical objects of interest for viewing purposes only. They provide opportunities for the quantitative analysis of objects, with no data about behaviour. Whilst accurate, the predominately used Finite Element Methods do not provide a full dynamic anaylsis. Physically Based Modelling (PBM) techniques facilitate such an approach but have not yet been fully exploited to allow surgeons to interactively explore and evaluate alternative corrective procedures in an objective and quantitative manner. The novel aspect is in contrast to previous models which impose limitations due to their construction. Such and approach allows a patient-specific model to be obtained without any mathematical reformulation by simply changing the bone geometry data. The technological issues centre on developing a PBM model and testing its correctness. This novel approach can be applied to patient-specific knee models and models of other joints of the body.
