Summary on Grant Application Form
This research proposal relates to the development of an acoustic pulse reflectometry technique for the accurate and automated monitoring of bore profile in brass and woodwind musical instrument construction, at various stages of the manufacturing process. This is seen as a crucial element in improving the quality of mass-produced instruments and in speeding throughput. The technique also has important applications in many other areas eg the nuclear industry. The proposal will address fundamental scientific problems which presently limit the length and flare angle of tubes that can be monitored accurately. It will also develop techniques which will allow the user to measure the precise size and location of leaks. Finally, a system will be tested in industrial environments.
