Summary on Grant Application Form |
A collaborative programme is proposed to explore a new approach to fabricating `all-solid' 2-D photonic microstructures. Such microstructures offer the prospect of semiconductor laser diodes and light-emitting diodes with improved spectral control, reduced spontaneous emission loss, and lower drive current, as required by commercial manufacturers. The `all-solid' approach offers the physical continuity and electrical integrity needed for incorporation in such electroluminescent devices. The method to be explored is laterally selective `steam' oxidation of (AlGa) As. The project aims to prepare (AlGa) As layers for this process using electron beam lithography and etching to define a variety of masks, for direct oxidation via selective exposure of the wafer surface, or indirect oxidation via the effects of patterned ion implantation. The intention is to incorporate such oxide/semiconductor structures into electroluminescent microcavity devices (resonant-cavity LEDs and potentially VCSELs) using the technique of wafer fusion.
