The proposal centres on the use of electrical discharge texturing (EDT) for the production of cold mill work rolls. EDT roll surface texture can be accurately specified and consistent results obtained between rolls. The process offers scope for engineering specific surface texture characteristics and roll metallurgy with knock-on effects in terms of sheet/strip formability and paintability. Overall the project will aim to characterise and, where possible, optimise both the geometrical surface texture and the surface metallurgy of the rolls and the rolled sheet/strip. Roll wear mechanisms will be evaluated together with microgeometric transfer characteristics from roll/sheet/strip interaction. Chromium plating/hard metal coating of the rolls will be investigated as will surface alloying using different electrode materials.
