Summary on Grant Application Form
High resolution X-ray scattering measurements will determine the critical thickness of thin metallic layers grown epitaxially on single crystal substrates beyond which the in-plane lattice parameters are no longer the same, while the crystallographic perfection deteriorates. Measurements both below and above the critical thickness will also be made of the conformal and non-conformal roughness of the interfaces so as to correlate these with the different growth conditions. The changes in the structure occurring when hydrogen is loaded into rare earth metals will be determined and correlated with the reversible metal-insulator transition and changes in the magnetic properties. The structures close to the lock-in transition of Rb2ZnCl4 will be measured and compared with the phase soliton model, and at Tc in Na2CO3 to quantitatively compare with the lattice melting model. The magnetic phase transition in rare earth superlattices will be studied to determine the cross over from ordering of the magnetic layers to ordering of the whole three dimensional system.
