Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project involves the synthesis and characterisation of several thread like compounds incorporating pi-electron rich and deficient aromatic units based on hydroquinone and paraquat units, respectively, which are terminated by alkyl chains of varying degrees of length and substitution, will be targeted. These building blocks will be used to self assemble [2] catenanes and [2] pseudorotaxanes, in solution in the solid state. The solution state aggregation properties of these structures will be investigated by NMR and UV spectroscopies and by mass spectrometry in the gas-phase. The solid state structures will be studied by X-ray crystallography, and the thermal properties will be investigated using polarising microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, to establish if the materials possess any liquid crystalline properties. Having established such systems, we will modify them chemically to reach ones which can be switched at a molecular level, by either photochemical, electrochemical or chemical means.
