Summary on Grant Application Form
We shall prepare a range of silylenes SiX2 and SiXX', in which the nature of X, X' or [X2]2- will be varied, so as to establish the stereoelectronic factors which affect the thermal stability of a silylene. The reactions of SiX2 with (1) an unsaturated compound, such as RNCO, P4 or [Pt(PPh3)3], (2) a protic compound, such C5H6, (+)-menthol or a metal hydride and (3) a halide, such as BrN(SiMe3)2 will be studied, giving rise to novel organosilicon compounds, silylene- or silyl- transition metal compounds, siliconium salts, or silicon-centred radicals. Asymmetric synthesis, from SiXX', will be explored. We shall prepare and study thermally stable carbenes CX2; their strong reducing property may lead to novel materials. A useful role will be sought for SiX2, SiXX' and CX2 as reagents or precursors for catalysts or materials.
