Based on our recent discoveries regarding the relative roles of true electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and Autler-Townes splitting in quantum coherence effects, we propose an experimental investigation of inversionless lasing schemes in which the lasing transition is in the blue (400nm), but in which the coupling laser is at a far removed (rather than closely matched) wavelength in the near IR (800nm). Demonstration of such a scheme would significantly extend the potential of inversionless-lasing, and hence its importance in leading to a new class of laser. We propose to extend these ideas yet further and explore experimentally the potential of RF (microwave) fields for controlling optical fields through induced quantum coherences. In particular, EIT and associated effects such as electromagnetically induced focusing and inversionless lasing will be explored, particularly in atomic beams and with possible extension to solid-state systems. We also propose to explore the effect of 'pure' EIT, isolated from associated effects such as Autler-Townes splitting for the first time, by carrying out a comprehensive range of atomic beam based experiments, so as to eliminate Doppler effects, in rubidium vapour. It is proposed to underpin all aspects of the experimental programme with comprehensive theoretical studies both to guide and interpret experiment.
