This proposal is to fund a new programme to study the electrical transport and magnetic properties of novel magnetic/semiconductor hybrid devices. This is a collaborative programme based upon the strengths of the Nottingham semiconductor group, the Leeds magnetics group and the Manchester magnetics sensors group. We will produce a wide range of magnetic overlayers above high-mobility near-surface electron and hole gases in GaAs/AiGaAs heterstructures. These layers will be lithographically and/or magnetically modulated to produce random, periodic and patterned magnetic fields to control the magnetotransport properties of the semiconductor devices. In parallel with this we will fabricate semiconductor devices with magnetic contacts to achieve the injection of spin polarised currents. These will be used to study spin dependent transport in InAs based devices. We will also study spin accumulation and spin dependent tunnelling. The aim of the programme is to demonstrate the technical feasibility of integrated hybrid devices and to elucidate the fundamental physics controlling their properties. The area of study has direct relevance to the development of new magnetic memory and recording technologies.
