The research will build on our work on the synthesis and characterisation of encapsulated 2-D magnetic nanoparticles to produce systems which can be fabricated into thin films or might show discotic liquid crystalline properties. We have shown previously that tetradentate NR1R2R3 tripodal ligands can be used to favour the formation of 2-D encapsulated mineral fragments by influencing the natural hydrolysis of M(III) ions. The resulting nanoscale particles can be related to portions of 2-D lattices such as the brucite structure and effectively form nanodisks. By varying the specific nature of the R groups we have a means of influencing both the properties of the nanodisks and for engineering the ligand coat in order to effect specified supramolecular packing interactions. These materials will be designed to favour supramolecular interactions which will easily lead to film formation or, indeed, by self-organising. This will require an interactive procedure of synthesis, characterisation and design of the next variation of the R groups. The properties of the nanoparticles means that these could be used as smart electronic or magnetic switching devices which may also undergo colour changes with temperature.
