Heat exchanger fouling causes increased operating costs but the expense and time involved in cleaning mean that optimal cleaning strategies should be found. This is a significant operational problem for energy-intensive processes such as distillation. This project considers the problem of on-line cleaning schedules in large networks of heat exchangers, where the constraints are more complicated than with individual units. The focus of the work is to develop appropriate and robust optimisation methods which can handle the non-linear dynamics of the networks and the associated constraints. This work addresses the operation of existing networks rather than the design aspects. Appropriate approaches to the problem will be investigated and rigorous numerical solution methods will be explored and tested using test cases and industrial plant data. Rigorous solution results will be compared with those obtained using short-cut methods to establish the validity and applicability of simpler approaches. The knowledge gained will be used to design a portable software application.
