Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to pattern both (giant) magnetoresisitive (MR) thin films and coercive media. The former, including both spin-values and multilayers, are of interest as miniature sensing elements and potentially as storage elements in MRAMs. The latter are used as high density storage media in conventional recording systems and as biasing magnets. We also propose to make ultra-small structures involving magnetic and other thin films to represent working components in sensing or storage systems. Thus by attaching contacts to a magnetic element or depositioning separate conducting strips, we will study directly the effect of local magnetic fields on the properties of magnetic nanostructures. Where current passes through the element itself, we will also study directly the effect of electromigration, one of the phenomena which will eventually define the limits to which miniaturisation can be pushed. Using the same technology, we will fabricate two component magnetic elements in which, for example, small permanent magnets made of a hard magnetic material (Co-Pt or Co-Cr) play a biasing role in a miniaturised MR sensor. By experiments such as these we will assess the improvement in performance to be expected for sensing and storage using novel nanomagnetic systems.
