Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme will firstly model and define the nature of the stress field at the crack tip in an adhesive layer, or a crack at an adhesive/substrate, as a function of the constraint imposed by the presence of the substrates. The degree of constraint is clearly a function of the location of the crack, the relative thickness of the adhesive layer to the width and thickness of the substrates, the properties of the adhesive and substrate, the type of loading (e.g. the ratio of tensile, mode I, to shear, mode II, loading) and the presence of any residual stresses. Secondly, how the stress state affects the extent of plasticity ahead of the crack and degree of crack tip blunting will be identified and hence, how the value of the fracture energy, Gc, is affected by the joint geometry and the material properties will be quantitatively determined. These models will then be applied to three specific cases of industrial importance: (a) the International Standard linear-elastic fracture-mechanics (LEFM) tests, (b) peel tests, and (c) fatigue tests and life-prediction modelling.
