Summary on Grant Application Form
This research will analyse the common scenario whereby public services and utilities in flexible polymer ducts are placed in roadside trenches and backfilled with soil prior to surface reinstatement. There are around 1,000 such trench openings made daily in the U.K. either for maintenance or new installations. The research will be based on finite element analysis of the duct-soil interaction with experimental support from laboratory trench box tests and in situ field trials. The aims are to determine best practice guidelines for duct/backfill design and installation. This will benefit: utility owners by ensuring a defect-free service life, local authorities by reducing intervention expenditure, and the public by reducing congestion at streetworks.
