Many industrial and scientific applications require measurements on small particles. Light scattering is a powerful tool, but has been mostly used for particle sizing. Other important properties include refractive index, shape and structure, which are the province of this proposal. Advantage will be taken of the CCD camera to display scattered intensity against two variable. This was applied successfully to particle sizing by observing the variation with angle and wavelength in forward scatter. By a change of angle this optical arrangement displays the rainbow and yields the refractive index of spheres. This can lead to temperature and chemical composition. Any spectral absorption is also displayed. Non-spherical particles cause polarisation changes between the incident and scattered light which can be indicated by plotting scattered intensity against input and output polarisations on the two axes. The project will use these techniques on particles of various types and sizes. By the end of the work the use of the rainbow measurement for temperature and composition of spheres will be clarified. For non-spherical particles recommendations will be available for the indication of size, refractive index and shape from the polarisation matrix.
