Summary on Grant Application Form |
The use of cold-formed steel in construction is growing. There are many benefits in terms of improved building performance, construction speed and economic savings. Whilst cold-formed steel sections themselves are highly efficient, both in terms of material usage and production, their application in fabricated frames is less so. The cost of fabrication can reduce or eliminate the potential advantages. the objective of this project to develop an analysis and design methodology for a new connection technique (mechanical clinching) that is potentially more efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly than conventional method. A large series of small scale tests will be carried out on single and groups of joints to prepare numerical models for the structural behaviour. Theoretical methods will be developed from this work and will be verified by a series of full-scale structural tests. There is a tremendous pressure in the construction industry to reduce costs and improve performance, which has led to a shift from traditional site based methods to factory production. The results of the project will help structural designer to optimise both the material and fabrication of light steel structural frames.
