A series of organofuctional PDMS membranes containing a known mole fraction of polar organic side-chains will be investigated for use in pervaporation of phenolic residues (both synthetic and plant samples). Aqueous phase solutes will include phenolic derivatives and other polar compounds. Some composite membranes will have an active bilayer. The best membranes will be compared with that of relevant commercially available membranes. The final part of the project will include an investigation at a pilot scale, and an economic evaluation of the integration of PV systems into an existing process for the recovery and recycle of an organic contaminant (eg p-cresol). This proposed programme of work tackles a real problem for a small but important class of organics. Further more it will act as a good model for other applicants, particularly other corrosive, toxic and environmentally unfriendly difficult-to-treat substrates.
