MHEG (Multimedia and Hypermedia information coding Expert Group) is a new standard for the development and presentation of multimedia applications. There is a need for an environment which will allow the user to manipulate external processes, such as engineering simulations, using standard multimedia. This Project will provide these facilities by exploiting the new MHEG standard, and driving/controlling packages such as MatLab and LabView within the multimedia environment. The work will be carried out in several stages, starting with background studies of current multimedia tools and design and simulation tools. A basic environment will then be developed to implement multimedia applications, while hooks between applications are identified. Work will be further carried out to add a real-time interface for passing information between applications and an Examplar will be developed to comprehensively illustrate the facilities provided. Multi-user and distributed facilities will then be added, before final testing and analysis. Several deliverables will be supplied by the Project. Reports on multimedia tools, design and simulation tools, and on work carried out in the Project, including an analysis of the final environment itself. In addition, four software implementations will be completed; these being the basic, real-time, networked, and workgroup handling versions of the environment.
