Summary on Grant Application Form |
Electrons in surface states at metal surfaces are scattered by adsorbates and defects, giving rise to charge density oscillations which act as a source of long-range coupling with other adsorbates or defects. These interactions have recently been cited as playing a role in a number of fundamental and technologically important surface processes, including determining equilibrium crystal shapes, interlayer transport during epitaxial growth, poisoning and promotion of catalytic reactions, and the dynamics of hydrocarbons at surfaces. However, their true influence is presently uncertain due to the lack of quantitative theory. Within this project ab-initio electronic structure techniques will be developed and applied to systematic studies aimed at mapping out surface-state mediated interactions between adatoms and/or steps. We will identify and quantify the importance of factors to the energetics including substrate material, adsorbate species, and step structure. Furthermore magnetic coupling due to spin-dependent scattering will be investigated, particularly as a potential source of long-range magnetic coupling between surface nanostructures.
