Summary on Grant Application Form |
Professor Gens will give his advice on a programme of stress path odoemeter tests that will be used to investigate the yeild behaviour of compacted bentonite fill as used in the engineered barriers for the containment of leachate from waste diposal facilities.Samples will constitue a designated quantity of bentonite (high, med or low) a suitable fine sand and water, Compaction curves will be used to identify appropriate starting conditions (density, water content and suction) for eaxh mix. Soil fabric studies will be performed using a scanning electron microscope and carbowax path odoemeter tests. Mineralogy sutdies will also be performed on each chosen mix. These tests will help in interpreting the influence of the compaction fabric on the elastic-plastic behaviour of the material. The results of the odeometer tests will be represented on a three dimensional plot of net total stress (ie sigma-v + 2sigma-h[/2), pore suction and a volumetric parameter, The development of vertical stress, radial stress and pore water suction will also be analysed separately.
