Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is proposed to use an optical fibre sensor to detect the onset of cracking in a composite laminate under quasi-static and fatigue loading. A well characterised transparent GFRP crossply laminate will be used, for which the technique of incorporating the optical fibre into the composite has been developed in preliminary work. The optical fibre coating and thickness for this composite material will be determined based on previous work. The first part of the testing programme will be to show that the obtrusivity of the optical fibre is low with respect to the damage (crack) initiation and accumulation under quasi-static and fatigue loading. It is then proposed to use optical fibre sensors to detect both the onset of cracking damage and damage accumulation. Well established analytical models for matrix cracking will enable the strain changes recorded by the sensors to be interpreted. Finally, a limited number of experiments will be carried out prepreg system to demonstrate the validity of using the fibre optic sensors to detect and monitor damage.
