|
Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols for distributed controlled wireless LANs, such the EY-NPMA protocol for HIPERLAN, are normally transmitter-centred and they fail to recognise the fact that sensing the channel at the transmitter does nor necessarily solve the problem of collisions at the intended receiver and over-suppressing transmissions from the nodes around the transmitter can lead to inefficient use of the radio medium. The proposed research will investigate a new receiver-centred MAC protocol which we refer to as IRI/IRD. We expect to maximise throughput per unit volume by minimising the volume centred on the receiver in which other nodes are required to defer. One method of fine tuning the spread spectrum gain of the short handshaking packets for this purpose will be investigated. The proposed programme includes an investigation of the protocol, simulation and theoretical study of its performance. Also, techniques which enable the protocol to handle multicast and broadcast traffic as well as intra-forwarding will be investigated.
