Summary on Grant Application Form |
There is great interest within the polymer community to establish well-defined links between the property of a bulk polymer and the chemical composition of the repeat unit (i.e. structure property relationships). These connections have been addressed in terms of local segmental motion on the length scale of a few repeat units and past efforts have illustrated how these motions are strongly linked with longer length relaxations associated with polymer properties such as the steady-state bulk viscosity. This programme will refine current perspectives regarding short length scale dynamics through a systematic computational investigation of these motions as a function of intramolecular (i.e. connectivity of chain) and intermolecular (chain environment of chain) details. A series of backbone structures will be used targeting the amount and the ordering of saturated and unsaturated bonding in the chain with the chosen bonding patterns bearing close resemblance to those possessed by members of the polydiene/polyolefin families. The later aim will be to perform these studies in vacuum and in melts (blended and unblended). A major mission of the project will be to relate the occurrence of specific microscopic relaxation mechanisms within a polymer with connectivity and environmental issues.
