|
Visual Programming Languages (VPLs) can take different forms (e.g. data and control flow languages). Data-flow VPLs have been said to offer particular advantages to novice programmers, but the evidence for this is in some doubt. We propose research into the ways in which novices learn how to use VPLs to understand programs. Specifically, we propose an examination of control and data-flow VPLs and their relative advantages for novice programmers.The methodology adopted requires the comparison of two specially designed VPLs, and the development of more 'intelligent' support for working with graphical data flow languages. The empirical work will draw on research by Green, Gilmore and others on the so-called 'match-mismatch' hypothesis. The research will provide more decisive conclusions relating to the advantages of specific types of VPLs for novices, and provide some insight into the processes involved in using and understanding VPLs in general. These findings will feed directly into the development of support tools which aim to increase the effectiveness and ease of use of data-flow VPLs.
