Summary on Grant Application Form
A new national facility for Medium Energy Ion Scattering (MEIS) has recently been established at CCRLC Daresbury Laboratory as a result of a (1992) joint grant proposal including the applicant. This application seeks the resources needed to pursue a Warwick-based research programme to explore the potential of MEIS to the elucidation of a range of surface and interface structural problems, particularly on metal surfaces and systems which build on the existing expertise of the Warwick group. These problems fall into two general areas. The first is concerned with quantitative determinations of surface structures, most notably adsorbate-induced reconstruction for which the high sensitivity of MEIS to lateral, as well as perpendicular, atom displacements provides information complementary to that obtained by other techniques. It is also proposed to study vicinal surface structures and possible step-edge relaxation effects. The second general class of problems also exploits the sensitivity of MEIS to sub-surface structure and composition, and covers problems related to the growth of metal films on metal substrates, surface alloy phases, and the crystallography, composition and adsorption properties of alloy surfaces. some exploratory external collaborations are also proposed, including an evaluation of MEIS for studies of oxide surfaces and metal overlays on oxides.
