Summary on Grant Application Form
The 60 GHz band is of tremendous importance for future micro/pico-cellular mobile systems and indoor radio LANs. MMIC technology is the key to lowering the cost of the required mm-wave subsystems. Some work is already going on in the UK to develop 60 GHz technology and demonstrate basic circuit functions. The proposed project contribution will look to the future and will investigate highly integrated transceiver architectures which use modulators and demodulators operating directly at 60 GHz. Such an approach can lead to lower RF complexity, which we wish to achieve in order to lower the costs and lower the DC power consumption for hand-held terminals. The drive for low DC power consumption is enhanced by being able to use the special devices to be developed at Glasgow for this purpose. In the transmitter the aim is to be able to use a 60 GHz modulator driven directly by baseband signals, using predistortion to combat non-linearities for high efficiency. In the receiver, the aim is to investigate the application of direct conversation methods in which the 60 GHz signal is directly converted to baseband.
