|
In this project we will undertake a detailed study of the magnetisation reversal process in metal evaporated tape (ME tape). This material is likely to become the high density recording media used for advanced applications in the next five years. In order to permit these applications it is essential that the underpinning science relating to its performance in the application is understood in the context of the application itself. Accordingly, we propose to carry out a detailed analysis of the magnetic properties of these materials and relate that behaviour to the magnetic microstructure and to the recording performance. We intend to complete the construction of a vector vibrating sample magnetometer to perform the measurements and to undertake studies on samples of controlled microstructure supplied by the University of Twente. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with Hewlett Packard Ltd. of Bristol who are the UK's leading tape drive manufacturers. They will provide all the recording studies and also samples of commercially produced ME tape. The performance of these materials will be studied in the context of the fundamental work undertaken in collaboration Twente.
