Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research will develop the concept of knee bracing in seismic design by testing knee elements both individually and in frames using equipment under development in the new Structural Dynamics Laboratory at Oxford. Knee braced frames are an example of dissipative design; the knee elements absorb energy, thus reducing the seismic response. This project follows work on small scale models performed by the principal investigator under grant GR/E01256. Pseudo-dynamic and real-time dynamic tests will be performed on individual knee elements, and also on 3/4 scale two storey knee braced frames. The sequence of testing has been planned so as to exploit the growing sophistication of the Department's new on-line testing facility, currently under development. The tests will yield important data on the performance of different knee bracing configurations and lead to the development of detailed design guidelines.
