Grain oriented silicon iron is manufactured and used widely by electrical machine manufacturers in the UK and its magnetic losses account for a few percent of all energy generated in the UK so it is an important strategic material. Recent work has demonstrated a better understanding of grain to the grain variation of field, flux and loss distribution is needed in order to optimise the effect of treatments such as domain refinement to reduce losses. Also barkhausen spectra has recently been more closely related to magnetic performance. In turn it is widely accepted that loss reduction in electrical steel can be best brought about by understanding and control of flux homogenuity and domain wall mobility. It is proposed to study these phenomena in a comprehensive series of related experiments on high permeability grain oriented steels and attempt to quantify relationships between grain to grain variations in local flux density and power loss with Barkhausen spectra and dynamic domain wall and to obtain an insight into their combined influence on the effectiveness of domain refinement techniques.
