We have made significant contributions to the development and industrial application of electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs). Our experience has shown that the fundamental physical basis of these techniques are not well understood. For example it is impossible to predict at the present time how an EMAT will per form on a given piece of steel without actually trying it. The present proposal aims to provide a sound understanding of the impact of the physical properties of technically important metals on the techniques of electromagnetic NDE and EMATs in particular. Many magnetic, electrical and metallurgical properties of steels and iron oxide are known for bulk material, however, in many cases it is the surface properties which strongly affect the efficiency of electromagnetic NDE. It is proposed to measure surface magnetic, electrical and magnetostrictive properties of a wide range of technologically important steels. It will be necessary to separate thin surface layers from the underlying metal in order to provide independent measurements of the surface and bulk properties. These properties will then be correlated with the performance of EMATs on these materials with a view to understanding and optimising these important devices.
