The projected 10-100x increase in magnetic storage density over the next ten years assumes that a range of media related problems can be rapidly solved. A number of complementary magnetisation tools (e.g. TEM, MFM etc.) exist to probe key features yet few provide direct quantitative information. An increasing requirement for fast turn-around quantitative imaging can be met by an additional technique, Scanning Hall Probe Microscopy (SHPM). SHPM is capable of rapid imaging with high magnetic field sensitivity, is tolerant to large excursions of field or temperature and can generate simultaneous measure of the magnetic field and is almost completely non-invasive. Building on previous SHPM experience we propose to develop a flexible system for the investigation of ferromagnetic materials which can become a national resource. The microscope will have high field sensitivity (<1uTI Hz) with 50-100nm spatial resolution and will be capable of generating simultaneous topographic images (-10nm resolution). A programme of measurements on advanced storage media, write heads, sensor materials and nanostructure arrays is proposed as well as comparative studies of MFM and SHPM.
