Hydrogen is a key ingredient in a plethora of materials, and as a reactant, dihydrogen plays an essential role in numerous industrial reactions. We propose to use p-H2 to trap, and hence facilitate the characterisation of intermediates in industrial processes by NMR spectroscopy. Using our approach protio solvent media become NMR transparent, and intermediates can be detected, and fully characterised, under the actual reaction conditions using industrially. We also propose to measure their rate of build up and determine activation parameters. With p-H2 it is possible to detect and characterise reaction components that lie outside the main catalytic pathway. these species may be responsible for by-product propionic acid, acetaldehyde and methane which are by-products of industrially important carbonylation processes. The data obtained will map the reactions profile of the industrial process we examine and allow catalysts to be modified in a systematic way and hence minimise the environmental impact of the process. We also propose to use hydrogen exchange reactions with p-H2 to enhance NMR signals for organic substrates. We plan to use this approach to probe transfer dehydrogenation reactions, measure the extent of unsaturation in fats, determine stereochemical arrangements in complex macromolecules and examine the surfaces of proteins.
