Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project is to make a new Atomic Force Microscope capable of atomic resolution in non-contact mode. The new AFM will also have a force feedback and modulation capability, which provides direct mechanical measurement of the interaction potential between individual atoms on tip and surface, into the strong interaction range. That such a microscope is possible has been established very recently. The forces between the tip and individual, known adsorbed species will be mapped as a function of separation - a new way to characterise formation of chemical bonds. Simultaneous measurement of tunnel current on conducting surfaces will give direct correlation between forces and currents, both key facets of interatomic bonds. The microscope will be also applied to real-space atomic imaging of diamond, alumina and other wide gap/dielectric surfaces, where the defect structure in particular is of great significance for their chemical or sensor function.
