Summary on Grant Application Form |
The rare earth metaphosphate glasses have a plethora of fascinating physical properties of fundamental interest and potential application in laser and optoelectronic technology. Characterisation of these macroscopic properties and attributes is well-advanced, together with underpinning (optical) spectroscopy and sophisticated ultrasonic studies. There is, however, a dearth of direct and quantitative information on the precise nature of the rare earth environment with the 'phosphate network', and on the network modifying effects of the metal. The proposal seeks to redress this in the context of a study of the atomic-scale structure of the systems, using a wide range of world-class experimental facilities and by computer modelling/simulation, and relating that closely to composition and to important parameters such as temperature. Whilst most of the facilities already exist for the proposal to be realised, and exploratory experiments have been successfully undertaken (and published), there is a need for resources to augment and run equipment, and for a pdra.
