Summary on Grant Application Form
This is an experimental study of double photoionization processes in alkali metal atoms far from threshold. The work will be performed at Daresbury Laboratory using a high resolution electron spectrometer containing two high sensitivity electrostatic energy analysr4s. The photoelectrons will be measured in coincidence and observed as a function of energy and angle yielding data which is fundamental to an understanding of the double photoionization process. We will make the first measurements of these double photoionization processes away from threshold for a system other than the inert gases and be able to provide a sensitive test of recent calculations for Mg and Ca which have used both CI wavefunctions for initial and final states and Hartree-Fock initial state wave functions. The experiments will provide a sensitive test for electron correlations in these metal atom systems.
