Summary on Grant Application Form |
This research takes advantage of the new fire testing facility at the University of Manchester and the combined analytical expertise of the two research groups at Manchester and Sheffield to investigate the behaviour of beams in fire when they are part of a larger framing system. Particular attention will be paid to the catenary action of beams restrained by adjacent framing members and to the behaviour of connections as the connected beams first heat up and then cool. These are problems which have been identified by current tests in the Large Building Test Facility ar Cardington and which require a more detailed investigation in a dedicated test rig. Existing software for the thermal analysis of structural elements in fire (Manchester) will be combined with software for the structural analysis of frames (Sheffield) and joints (Manchester) in fire to produce a more comprehensive analysis than has been possible to date. This software will be calibrated against an extensive test programme carried out in a purpose-built furnace/loading rig. Subsequent parametric studies will allow design recommendations to be made which will be suitable for inclusion in future design standards.
