Summary on Grant Application Form
Although in recent years much progress has been made in the synthesis of new lanthanide (II) compounds, there remain large gaps in lanthanide (II) chemistry. We propose to address one such gap, the chemistry of lanthanide (II) compounds with pnictide-based ligands of large steric bulk. A series of such compounds will be synthesised and their reactions with organic substrates will be studied. The use of extremely bulky ligands is expected to lead to novel compounds having new and interesting structures and potentially useful reactions. This work will particularly focus on the effect of steric and electronic factors on the reactions of such compounds with organic substrates. Previous work has been shown that extremely bulky compounds often undergo highly unusual reactions which are not observed with less bulky analogues. Lanthanide (II) compounds are becoming increasingly important as reagents for stereoselective organic synthesis. Using information obtained from our studies we expect to be able to tailor the steric and electronic properties of our compounds in order to maximise the selectivity. This project will advance lanthanide chemistry through the isolation of novel species and the observation of new types of reactions with potential application in synthetic organic chemistry.
