Summary on Grant Application Form |
The goal of this research programme is to address the issue of robust scalable coding algorithms for next generation flexible video codecs. These will be evaluated in the context of combined broadcast and wireless communications systems such as Hiperlan and DECT in conjunction with satellite and terrestrial broadcast channels considering bit rates in the range 64kb/s - 2Mb/s. Since some of these systems are either not defined or not physically available, simulation studies based on the use of simulation and modelling tools under development at Bristol will be used extensively. For true multimedia applications, video will normally be combined with associated audio data. The trade-offs between audio and video bandwidths at various bit rates will be examined in conjunction with researchers at Kings College London.
