The School of Chemistry at St.Andrews has an excellent record of achievement in the use of EPR in chemical research. This application is to replace an instrument awarded in 78 which is now obsolete. Over 100 publications in referred journals resulted from the previous grant. The EPR spectrometer will be used for the detection, characterisation (electronic, structural, conformational) and kinetic study of paramagnetic species derived from: functionalised cyclohexadienes, dihydropyridines, dihydroacridines, dihydroanthracenes, other novel radical precursors, highly strained polycyclic molecules, spiro-epoxides, silylamines, functionalised polymers with well defined molecular weights, fumarate polymers, macroheterocyclic molecules, II/VI and III/V metal alkyl semiconductor precursors, iron-sulfur nitrosyl self-assembly intermediates, Co and Ni macroheterocyclic species, conjugated polymers and their precursors, oxides of Ti, Nb, Cu and Bi, microporous solids coated with TMs, nitrosothiols and nitrosovasodilator drugs (spin trapping), biomolecules by reaction with nitric oxide (nitroxides), boronic esters, imines, N-hydroxyguanidine derivatives, sulfur centres in oligosaccarides, plant nodules, rhizomes.
