Summary on Grant Application Form
We put forward 6 interrelated modules of work. We propose in:M1. To explore why DLVO theory does not describe the observed rates of aggregation for inorganic salts. We will measure zeta potentials in supersaturated solutiond to determine whether dynamic effects can account for this observation.M2. To build a Laminar Flow Crystalliser which will enable measurement of aggregation rates under well defined hydrodynamic conditions. We proposae then to explore whether the observed dependence and be used to predict aggregation rates in stirred tanks.M3. To conduct a series of experimant using tracer particles that will test for the significance of breakage - a process frequently hypothesised as occuring in parallel with aggregation.M4. To extend our TEM technique for imaging crystal aggregates at lattice resolution. This would allow the elimination of preparation artefacts, extension to other systems and training of other members of our group.M5. To apply our existing techniquesl and those of modules M1 to M4 to two new systems calcium carbonate and barium sulphate. In this way we will address our key objective of extending our understanding.M6. A small amount of numerical and computational work.
