Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this proposed project is to design, develop and evaluate an integrated portable multi-channel tele-medicine system compatible with existing telecommunications networks and upgradable for use with third generation networks. The use of 'mobile radio' or cellular networks in tele-medicine is a new area of research. The system described in the accompanying Case for Support would enable a specialist to monitor a patient who is not linked by a conventional telephone line, for example, at home or in a normal working environment, for sports medicine and for emergency medical situations. The project will require research of a fundamental nature to study the problems of transmitting cellular digital packet data, including the situation when several parameters are multiplexed and when there is loss of data due to fading. The final objective is to evaluate a prototype capable of transmitting biomedical parameters, initially the electrocardiogram (ECG). This project is expected to have significant potential for commercial exploitation, initially in the medical field and subsequently for non-medical applications.
