We will study the advantages of QWSCs for TPV in blackbody, ytterbia and erbia spectra using the GaInAsp system. The advantages and likely benefits are:I) The effective band-gap for absorption in a QWSC can be tailored to produce the ideal value for a given spectrum simply by changing the well width. A range of low band-gaps suitable for TPV are possible in the GaInAsP system by changing well and barrier compositions, lattice matched to InP.II) The output voltage of a QWSC is enhanced compared to control cells made from the well material leading to higher efficiencies.III) A further advantage arises from II) in that for the same power conversion efficiency as a conventional cell made from well material QWSCs operate a higher voltage and lower current. Hence series resistance effects will be smaller enabling the high radiant flux levels in TPV to be accommodated.IV) QWSCs have better temperature coefficients of efficiency than conventional cells made from the well or the barrier material which is important in the high temperature environment of TPV.
