Summary on Grant Application Form |
The ability to automatically classify, and hence understand, complex images is becoming increasingly important. This work aims to show how regions in such images may be described with regards to their texture so that a classifier, such as a neural network, may be used to identify them. Textures are extracted using Gabor filters - a bandpass, oriented filter. Several aspects of these filters are examined, including how an optimal set of such filters may be chosen, how colour information may be included and how important the phase of the texture is. Most importantly, we will explore how the texture of a region in an image may be described using only a small number of descriptors. All of these aspects will be quantified with respect to three large, complex datasets of images which cover medical and scene analysis applications. Classifiers will be trained to label these images and an accurate analysis of typical performance will be available. The work will enable scientists and engineers to apply image understanding techniques in their own fields of specialisation, with the ability to quickly and automatically select the correct set of texture filters required for a particular task.
