Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this project is to develop models for predicting sound transmission through double walls, concentrating in particular on the effects of finite cavity depth and absorption on transmission. The project will examine the relationship between the damping of the cavity and absorption which may be present around the edges, over the surface of the leaves or suspended in the cavity. A database of material properties will be assembled and the theoretical relationship between material properties and damping determined. The radiation from the leaves of the wall into a cavity will be studied to determine how finite cavity depth and the presence of absorptive material affect the system. Non-resonant transmission between a room and a cavity and non-resonant coupling between the two leaves of the wall will also be studied. Both lightweight partitions and masonry walls will be studied to provide measured data for comparison with the results from the theoretical models.
