Summary on Grant Application Form
It is the intention of the proposed research to develop long life electrochemical sensors for measuring oxygen in molten silver and lead. At present the oxygen sensors use in the metallurgical industries, to measure dissolved oxygen in molten metals, are of dip type. The oxygen sensors will be employing stabilized zironia as an oxygen ion conducting ceramic membrane. This will control accurately the continuous deoxidation of molten silver or lead. The novel sensors for measuring antimony and bismuth in lead will be developed using bismuth and antimony containing vitreous solid electrolytes. On successful testing of the sensors for oxygen, antimony and bismuth in the laboratory, plant trials will be conducted in the Gravesend Plant of Britannia Refined Metals.
