Summary on Grant Application Form
The inherently subjective nature of most current orthopaedic surgical procedures creates a number of problems which often results in a suboptimal positioning of implants or surgical correction leading to a less than satisfactory outcome of the surgery. This may necessitate revision or shortening the lifespan of the implant. Therefore, there is the need for smart systems in order to standardise certain techniques facilitating planned and reproducible positioning accuracy. The aim of this project is to investigate, through the development of a laboratory based demonstrator, the use of a computer-robotic system for image guided interventions to assist, initially in two orthopaedic procedures: osteotomy, a surgical fracture which is performed either to correct for deformity or to alter the stresses on a joint, and total knee replacement. The research work involves (1) analysis of the procedures (2) investigation/development of a computer planning and an innovative guidance system, a smart saw and manipulator for its accurate and safe positioning and guidance (3) evaluation of the system through simulated surgical procedures. An integrated approach involving three institutions and two hospitals will be adopted. A sucessful outcome leading on from this project would be the introduction of new technologies into the operating theatre.
