Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme comprises two connected components. The first, co-ordinated by York, will construct a framework for modelling user interaction with VR systems that integrates previous work at York in modelling software artefacts, the general resources needed by users to perform specific tasks, and cognitive resources required to interpret feedback and form goals. This model will allow the design of a VR interface to be assessed early in the development lifecycle. An associated project studentship will investigate empirical evaluation of immersiveness in VR and the development of usability assessment techniques for VR systems. The second component, co-ordinated by RAL, will be concerned with the design and implementation of a VR interface toolkit to support the rapid prototyping of interactionally-rich environments. Mechanisms will be provided to build complex interaction components from more primitive elements, and account will be taken of the broad range of hardware environments in which a system based on the toolkit might be utilised. The toolkit will be assessed byre-implementing test scenarios drawn from applications developed by the industrial partner, ColtVR Ltd. Re-implementation of these scenarios will utilise the design and assessment techniques developed at York, and will support evaluation of both the toolkit and the design method.
