Summary on Grant Application Form
The propagation and generation of light in III-V photonic crystal waveguides (PCWs) and related devices will be investigated. The demonstration of suppression of PCW guided modes within a wide band of frequencies will allow the creation of waveguide microcavities and give control of the photonic density of states and spontaneous emission in active structures. The PCW concept can be applied to many existing optoelectronic devices, e.g. lasers, filters, couplers and non-linear elements. A comprehensive approach, embracing theory, design, fabrication and device implementation, will be developed to advance fundamental understanding while producing advanced technological devices. The project will bridge the gap between academic research and industrial development in a major new field within photonics and optoelectronics. A number of specific devices will be designed and fabricated, including 2D generalisations of conventional DFB lasers, novel forms of VCSEL that do not require multilayer mirror stacks but instead employ PCWs - and fully etched - through 1D and 2D GaAs/AlGaAs waveguide structures similar to those already demonstrated at Glasgow.
