Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is concerned with the use of `non-equilibrium' plasmas to affect surface modification of organic materials. Plasma-based technology can be used in the treatment of polymer films/webs, fine particles (e.g. powders) and fibres or flakes and is of growing industrial importance. Through this programme, we will develop a better understanding of how the external plasma variables affect the nature of the species arriving at organic surfaces. Such knowledge will allow us to effectively optimise surface treatments. For example, an important unresolved issue is the relative importance of ion energy versus ion flux in effecting rapid treatment. This type of question can be addressed through an enhanced understanding of the boundary region physics and chemistry.
