Summary on Grant Application Form |
I propose to contribute to the research of Charissa, one of the major collaborators in UK academic nuclear physics research. As part of the Charissa programme on clustering in nuclei, I propose a detailed investigation of spin polarization in 12C on 12C, 160 on 160 and 160 on 12C heavy ion collisions which excite nuclear energy states which break up into alpha particules. The aim would be to understand the mechanism by which nuclear spins align. The measurements would be made using a sophisticated new detection system based on an established technique. The alpha particle cluster structure of the nuclei chosen may be important in the reaction mechanism. The data sets for the different collisions and states excited would be compared both with each other and with relevant theoretical models. As part of the Charissa programme on light heavy ion interactions, I propose an investigation of transfer breakup reactions induced by 7Li collisions with 120Sn. In these reactions a nucleon is transferred from or to the 7Li and the resulting nucleus then breaks up. The aim would be to discover whether the CDCC approach, which has proved very successful for 7Li breakup is valid for the more complex transfer breakup reactions.
